Heat Stroke and Drugs

The heat goes on! And we read of deaths due to the heat, often among the homeless. However, a new publication in the Southern Medical Journal has reported on eight deaths due to heat stroke where there was a pretty clear association with medication. Of the eight, seven had taken one or more of the following: cocaine, diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), a tricyclic antidepressant (like Elavil® or Tofranil®), or a phenothiazine (a majortranquillizer such as Mellaril® or Serentil®). Read about it in   Medscape  and draw the necessary conclusions – when on meds, take special care in the heat!
