“Another Little Drink . . .”
Fri, January 27, 2006 at 06:25AM “. . . wouldn’t do us any harm!” goes the old song. It’s beginning to look like that’s the case, provided you stop at two or three. The latest of a series of studies about alcohol intake and health provides further evidence that a couple of alcoholic drinks can provide some protection against various conditions – this time, it’s stroke.
A study of over 3000 people over 40 showed that, compared with non-drinkers, those who took at least one drink a month but not more than two a day had a 33% reduced risk of having an ischemic stroke. (An ischemic stroke is the more common type where there’s a clot or some other obstruction in a small brain artery – as opposed to a hemorrhage from a blood vessel in other types of stroke.)
This study did not report on heavy drinkers. But other trials have found that more than two drinks a day for women or three drinks a day for men are bad for your health, not good. Like all medicines, it’s the dose that makes the poison!
