Avoid Holiday Poundage
Tue, November 21, 2006 at 03:51AM Now’s the time to think of strategies to help you avoid that holiday weight gain that’s so hard to reverse in January (and February). Here are some well-known tips collected together by Dr S Hogan of UCDS Center for the Treatment of Obesity:
1. Eat the calories you want but not the ones you don’t need.
2. Avoid unhealthy snacking. Don't stand by the appetizer table, but far across the room.
3. Eat a healthy snack before going to the party – you’ll be less hungry and be able to scorn the appetizers.
4. Use a salad-sized plate, especially if you’re a member of the Clean Plate Club.
5. Before the big meal drink a full glass of carbonated water, as well as during the meal, to help you feel full sooner.
6. Eat slowly, and stop after twenty minutes if it’s polite to do so.
7. Cut the fat in the traditional dishes.
8. Don’t starve yourself all day before the holiday meal, but stick to healthy foods like fruits and veggies.
9. Limit the bread, sauces, and dressings.
10. Drink red wine instead of margaritas.
11. Add to your basic exercise program during the days of extra calories. Rake the leaves!
12. And have a good time, with plenty of laughter.
