Retirement is Dangerous for Your Health
Sun, November 26, 2006 at 03:07AM Before you thumb your nose (or whatever) at the boss you might want to read this report from the US National Bureau of Economic Research. Based on studies made between 1992 and 2003, they find that complete retirement leads to a 23% to 29% increase in difficulties in mobility and performing daily activities (maybe because of too much couch-time in front of the TV?). There’s an 8% increase in illnesses, and, worst of all, an 11% decline in mental health.
Perhaps the idea of delaying the retirement age proposed by some Government officials isn’t such a bad idea. Apart from the Social Security and pension payments saved, there should be a reduction in health costs.
I tried retirement for all of three months – that was quite enough (and my wife agreed!). So look for a welcome change in occupation, instead. Not sure what to do? The Alzheimer’s Association identifies 4 major components to staying healthy in later life: mental stimulation, physical activity, social interactions, and a healthy diet. That shouldn’t be too restrictive. And if you can earn a little too, you can afford those adventure vacations you’ve always wanted.
