Boxing Day - Eggnog Time?
Tue, December 26, 2006 at 03:42AM Boxing Day – December 26, the day after Christmas, St Stephen’s Day – is a public holiday in Britain, Australia, Canada, and other countries. So what better day to indulge in a healthy restorative (and maybe an anti-hangover measure known as the ‘hair of the dog’). Now there’s a hint that even the dreaded eggnog may be good for your health, rather than adding pounds, fat, and alcohol.
A clinical trial has been reported that shows that liquid eggs enriched with omega-3 can reduce the blood triglyceride levels by 32%effect a modest reduction in blood pressure; serum omega-3 blood levels were increased by about 100% ( eicosapentaenoic acid ) and 200% ( docosahexaenoic acid). A serving of the liquid eggs provides a total of 250 mg of these two omega-3 acids – twice the average daily intake in the USA . You can take your enriched eggs scrambled or as eggnog, I suppose. If you’d prefer a Bloody Mary for Boxing Day, that’s fine, too; the tomato and veggie juices it contains will do you almost as much good as two liquid enriched eggs.
