How to Treat a Hangover
Mon, January 1, 2007 at 03:49AM In case the foregoing article didn’t help, here are some tips from the National Headache Foundation on how to ease holiday overindulgence:
Drink in moderation. Sip slowly. Mixed drinks with fruit or vegetable juices will do less harm. Avoid red wine, as it contains congeners, which play a role in causing headache.
Alternate non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, if possible. Even if it’s just a glass of water.
Eat greasy food before the party. It helps line the intestines, thus slowing alcohol absorption.
Eat some honey (before or after drinking). It supplies fructose, which helps the body metabolize alcohol. Two tablespoons on a cracker before the party may help. Tomato juice also contains fructose.
Drink fluids containing minerals and salts. They offer relief from dehydration. Broth or bouillon is good. Gatorade® also qualifies.
Drink a cup of coffee. The caffeine will help headache symptoms and relieve pain. It’s good the next morning, too.
Take ibuprofen (Advil®). It’s less irritant to the stomach than aspirin.
