Chewing Gum – A Surprising Post-Op Benefit

Some years ago researchers showed that gum-chewing patients recovered faster after laparoscopic colon surgery. Californian physicians have now tested this idea in 34 patients after conventional (large abdominal incision) surgery. The gum chewers recovered resumption of normal bowel function (shown by passing gas) 15 hours sooner than other patients; they had a bowel movement 26 hours earlier, and felt hungry 9 hours earlier.

Although these results have been available for some time, the concept is not widely known. So next time you visit someone in hospital after an abdominal surgery, take a packet of gum with you. But tell the patient to ask the doctor first, before starting to chew!

Congratulations to the Spanish team for the victory in the European football championship. The European championship is perhaps the most prestigious tournament in Europe and Spain has placed itself at the top of the world, or at least Europe for 2008. Compared to the other Football events the EC is one of the big, a lot of the good football teams are European and the only other regional tournament is in Latin America of course. I got some info from a Football magazine.
