Another Botox Use – An Overactive Bladder
Thu, June 8, 2006 at 05:10AM We can add to the list of all the things Botox can do – help people with an overactive bladder. It has to be injected directly into the muscle at the outlet of the bladder, just once, for a beneficial effect that lasts at least a year. This is different from the other uses of Botox, where the effects usually wear off after 3 months or less.
Swiss scientists injected Botox in 150 patients with overactive bladders that didn’t respond well to anticholinergic drugs. Nine months later 82% of the patients were able to hold their urine. At 11 months, 43% of them were still continent, while 23% required re-injection. One star patient was free of symptoms for more than 4 years after the first injection.
Why is the effect so much longer with this use of botox? The investigators hope that it’s because Botox gives the bladder time to relax and retrain itself to not give the signal to urinate until it’s full. This would indeed suggest that some patients are cured of their problem, a major step forward, indeed.
