Eggs Are Better Than Their Reputation
Sat, July 8, 2006 at 05:08AM Ever since cholesterol reared its ugly head, eggs have been shunned as being ‘cholesterol bombs’. It’s true the yolk contains cholesterol – 212 milligrams, on average - but it’s not true that this goes straight to your arteries. Only a small amount of the cholesterol from food passes into the blood. Almost all the cholesterol in the atheromatous plaques in the arteries comes from saturated and trans fats that you eat.
So eating eggs isn’t bad for your heart. One large study found no connection between eating eggs and heart disease, according to the Harvard University Gazette. (An exception was diabetics, where there was a slightly greater risk for egg eaters.) One-a-day should do you no harm, unless you also eat considerable saturated and trans fats. Eggs are a good source of nutrients: 6 grams of protein, and some healthful unsaturated fats, choline, lutein, and zeaxanthine, which are good for both memory and vision.
