What’s the Difference between LASIK and LASEK?

If you have to ask this question, you’re probably contemplating eye surgery to correct your vision. LASIK stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis; it was introduced in the mid-90s to replace the old keratectomy procedure (PRK). A flap is made at the top of the surface layer of the cornea to give access to the underlying cornea.

LASEK, or laser epithelial keratomileusis, the surface layer of the cornea is treated with alcohol and then peeled back to allow reshaping of the underlying cornea.

Which procedure is better?  According to University of Illinois scientists, “Both procedures seem safe, effective, and predictable for the treatment of low to moderate near-sightedness (myopia).”

Another comparison, from Britain, is available online. The authors come down on the side of LASEK. They summarize: “LASEK has no significant surgical risks and is universally suitable for a large range of corrections, unlike LASIK. Initial results are as good as LASIK with few of the problems associated with either LASIK or PRK. In [our opinion], it should be the choice of procedure unless the risk of surgical cut and related flap problems are exceeded by perceived individual benefit from speed of recovery.”

We suggest you rely on the advice of your eye care professional, who can weigh the benefits and cons of each procedure, together with his/her own personal experience, and advise you accordingly. An improved PRK is available for those patients who don’t fit the picture for LASIK or LASEK. Don’t take advice from friends and neighbors, or non-experts.
