Calcium Supplements Aren’t Just For Women
Sat, December 20, 2008 at 03:00AM Hip fractures occur in older men as well as in older women; in fact, some experts claim that 1 in 4 hip fractures occur in men. To see if calcium supplementation could be helpful in men, a study was done in New Zealand and reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
A total of 323 healthy men of average age 57, who had normal bone mineral density (BMD), were given calcium supplements - 600 mg a day or 600 mg twice a day. Over 2 years the BMD was stable in the placebo and low-dose calcium groups, but increased by 1.5% in the high-dose calcium group. Additional lab exams showed a dose-related decrease in parathyroid hormone and bone turnover. There were no significant differences in fracture rates or serious adverse effects in any treatment group.
These results suggest that calcium supplements can be as important for men as they are for women. However, such a study should be done with the fracture rate in mind; i.e. many more patients and a longer follow-up period will be needed. There’s no great harm in men taking calcium supplements, except, maybe, a very slightly increased risk of cardiovascular events – this has been demonstrated in older women.

Hi friends, many people have a wrong thought that calcium supplements are just for the women only. Beside the calcium supplements, other kind of supplements from foods also can help for men to develop and maintain their health care. As a consumer, I received no any side effects for me after used both. It is really working well and guarantees our good health care.
