Tanning vs. Suntan Lotion

You may have seen recent newspaper ads for tanning salons, which are touting the benefits of artificial sunlight in increasing your vitamin D levels, to help combat heart disease and cancer, not to mention osteoporosis. Don’t be fooled. The American Academy of Dermatology is fighting back. The President of the Academy, C. William Hanke, MD, FAAD, made the following statement: "While the health benefits of vitamin D are well known, it also is well known that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause skin cancer. Vitamin D is essential for optimal health, and appropriate amounts of vitamin D can be obtained through a healthy diet which includes naturally enriched vitamin D foods, fortified foods and beverages and/or vitamin supplements. Intentional exposure to UV radiation from the sun (natural) or tanning devices (artificial) is not a safe or effective way to obtain vitamin D. There is substantial evidence that excessive exposure to any form of UV radiation increases the risk of developing melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Individuals who intentionally expose themselves to UV radiation for vitamin D are putting themselves at risk for developing skin cancer."

I believe Dr Hanke is right. Get your vitamin D from kippers, mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna, and free-range eggs. When outside in sunshine for a length of time, seek shade, wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and sunglasses. And avoid tanning salons!
