Women and Depression – A Helpful Brochure

Nearly 18 million US citizens experience depression every year. Of these, only about a third receives the treatment needed for them to return to a normal, useful life. Women experience depression twice as often as men – as many as one in 8 will have a depressive episode in their lifetime.

Some causes or circumstances related to depression are unique to women: post-partum changes, infertility, and hormonal changes. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has prepared a useful brochure that highlights causes, symptoms, and treatments, with sections on seeking professional help, self-help, and preventing recurrences. You can access this brochure online. I highly recommend it.
