Hurrah! Back to Bacon and Eggs for Weight Loss!

Back in 2005 a publication in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showed that people who ate eggs for breakfast felt more satisfied and ate fewer calories at the following meal, compare with others that ate a bagel-based breakfast with the same calories and same weight.
Now, in a new study reported in the International Journal of Obesity , the same researchers used a similar approach, but in overweight and obese persons who were on a reduced-calorie weight loss diet. There were 152 subjects (men and women aged 25 to 60) in the study; their body mass index (BMI) was over 25 but below 50, i.e. they were overweight, obese or very obese.
Compared with the subjects who ate a bagel breakfast, the egg-eating subjects lost 65% more weight, had a 61% greater reduction in BMI, and reported a higher energy level, over the 2-month study period. The egg and bagel breakfasts had the same number of calories and had identical weights. Blood lipids were not changed during the study, either in those eating the eggs or those with the bagel breakfast.
The researchers concluded that “the egg breakfast enhances weight loss, when combined with an energy-deficit diet, but does not induce weight loss in a free-living condition.” So you still have to limit your calorie intake – but it can be tastier with eggs; and you don’t really need much bacon to go with them.
