More Exercise Needed to Keep the Weight Off
Tue, August 5, 2008 at 11:00AM It appears that advice on the amount of exercise required to maintain weight loss has been inadequate. More physical activity is needed than previously suggested by experts, according to a study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Boston researchers examined the effect of duration and intensity of physical activity in over 200 overweight or obese women who lost roughly 10% of their weight over 6 months. However, in the next 18 months, only a quarter of them had maintained the 10% loss. Those who managed to sustain their loss had increased their physical activity from the 6-month baseline by roughly 275 minutes a week, or 40 minutes daily (or 55 minutes a day, 5 days a week). There was no significant difference if the exercise was of vigorous or moderate intensity.
The scientists conclude that adding 40 minutes’ physical activity daily was needed to allow the 10% weight loss to be sustained. This may well mean lifestyle changes in addition to formal exercise, such as arranging for more movement in work and leisure, and less TV. Family members should help in such endeavors.
