Diverticulosis Patients Can Eat Nuts and Corn

Diverticulosis and diverticulitis patients are (or used to be) recommended to avoid nuts, corn, and seeds, in order to prevent complications. However, it’s by no means sure that these diet restrictions are beneficial. A new analysis done in participants of the Health Professionals Follow-up Study has helped solve this question. It’s been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Over 47,000 men were followed for an 18-year period. At baselinethey were free of diverticulosis or its complications, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Food frequency questionnaires were administered every 4 years, along with questions on health changes.

There were 801 new cases of diverticulitis and 383 cases of bleeding from the lesions. Those men with the greatest intake of nuts, corn and popcorn had the lowest risk for diverticulitis. There was no association, however, with a higher intake of these items and the risk of bleeding from diverticulitis or the risk of a diagnosis of diverticulosis.

This large study proves, pretty conclusively, that there’s no need for recommendations to stay away from these foods to avoid the risk of diverticulitis or its complications. And we know how good nuts and corn and non-deep-fried popcorn are for you (provided the popcorn is so-called ‘healthy’ popcorn).
