A Simple Questionnaire to Screen for Psychiatric Conditions
Thu, March 18, 2010 at 02:00AM Many people may wonder, from time to time, if they have a mental problem; but they’re reluctant to discuss this with friends or family, or even with their family doctor, for fear of being ridiculed. (And there are others who just enjoy answering questionnaires about themselves!)
One in five Americans have one of the 4 mood disorders covered by the one-page, 27-item questionnaire: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTDS), and bipolar disorder. You can see the free screener, which is called M-3, at www.mymoodmonitor.com. It was developed by psychiatrists at the University of North Carolina, Cornell University, and Boston University, and these researchers have published the results of a validity test in the Annals of Family Medicine.
Considering that 10% of those suffering from these conditions never receive treatment because they don’t realize what’s wrong with them, this simple approach appears a very worthwhile tool.
