Are You an “Abbie”?
Tue, July 4, 2006 at 04:59AM The first baby-boomers are now entering their 60s, and as they age they’re now called “abbies”. They’re a health-conscious group, which is just a well, as they may need to take steps now to ensure they live the rest of their life to the full.
The July issue of Harvard Health Letter reports that the average life expectancy in the USA is 77.6 years, compared with 75.4 years in 1990. But if you are male and have reached 65, you can now expect to live to 81.6 years. And if you reach 85, you can expect to get to 90. Women still out do men, although the gap is closing.
The USA isn’t doing as well as some other countries. In fact, they are in places 12 and 15 (men and women, respectively). And, as we’ve reported before, American boomers lag behind their UK counterparts with regard to healthcare, having higher rates of cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, lung disease, and stroke. You can assess your life expectancy with an online calculator from MSN.
