Helping Stroke Patients Walk Again

After a stroke, many patients end up with an irregular walk, or need a walker. Now the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation have developed a technique to help stroke victims regain a normal gait, as far as possible.

The method consists of having the patient walk on a treadmill with a harness supporting their body in such a way that there is equal weight distribution on both legs. This partial body weight support allows them to walk with just a cane and, maybe, a leg brace, within 2 weeks after their stroke. .

So far, results have been excellent – eight patients have taken part, and all have had successful outcomes. Five of the eight now walk without canes.

So, try to avoid a stroke in the first place. But, if worst comes to worst, don’t give up hope. There are willing physical therapists who will do their utmost to get you back on your feet, and walking normally again.
